Post Round Notes

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

First things first:
  1. The Divot Board

This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own. If you don't have yours yet, what's holding you back?

  2. Meditation

Full transparency here. A few issues ago I espoused the benefits of Meditation to get your mind ready for pressure golf. I suggested 10 minutes of meditation daily, and I have NOT held up my end of the bargain in testing it out daily for 30 days.

    No excuses.

It's been "on" and "off" for me, but I am re-committing to more "on" than "off" as of today. I did notice a calming effect when I did it in the morning on the days when I did do it. I still think it has a lot of merit.

    I'll keep you posted.

Post Round Notes

After you finish your round of golf, there are a few things that you can do to help you improve the next time you play. They are intuitively simple, but they do take some effort.

I think that you may not learn too much from a match you've won with a good score, because the bad shots can get mentally swept under the rug in the euphoria of the win.

Whereas in my view, failure is only a failure if you don't learn from it. Failure can be looked at as a great learning opportunity (but don't mention that to someone who just missed a 5 ft putt to hand you a win 😁).

You may be thinking "but Tom I do think about my game after playing a round", but I'm saying "think more formally and write a few things down."

Now you're thinking "but Tom, that's work!" and I'm saying "Suck it up buttercup. Do the work if you want to improve". That's a little harsh, but you get the message.

I'm not big on "journaling" per se. If you are, you're ahead of the game, because I'm going to suggest a few steps that require some sort of note taking and review.

I always write down the answers to three post round questions in the notes on my phone. I keep them under a separate folder called Post Round Notes.

This is an actual post round phone note from the 2nd last time I played golf in 2020 on a day when I rushed a workout in before I played. I also added the notation [ DONE ] after I completed the two practice sessions, and incidentally, on my last round of 2020 my chipping was back up to par.
  • 10/19/2020 Friday Batavia CC
    1. Good - driver, putting
    2. Bad/Needs Improvement - chipping was sub-standard, herky jerky stroke, on the back nine it held me back from a great score
    3. Corrective Action - practice more "slide/bounce chipping" 120 reps over 2 days on my home green [DONE]
drink a little more protein on the front nine when I workout prior to golf for strong focus for the whole round
Actually writing this information down in a handwritten journal or notebook is more effective, than making notes in a phone. Research has proved that the act of physically writing it out manually has more retention merit. However, either phone notes or writing notes in a journal will help develop top of mind awareness for the mental or physical corrections necessary to improve your game.

Either is exponentially more beneficial than just doing a mental review after your round without taking notes. And on the good golf days, making notes will force you to evaluate the bad swings that may have slipped your mind.

Personally, I would be likely to forget to write in a journal or notebook after every round. However, I rarely forget to make notes in my phone because I've already developed the habit to begin with, and my phone is always with me.

I could expound on more questions to ask oneself, and go into greater depth on some corrective actions. I've tried that in the past, but I've whittled it down to these three questions.

The key for me is to keep it simple (the old K.I.S.S), then I'm likely to do it. I hope that works for you too.

Here are the three simple questions that you should formally ask and answer yourself about your round in a written note form (electronic or manual) ASAP after you play:
  • Date - Day - Course
    1. Good -
    2. Bad/Needs Improvement -
    3. Corrective Action -
If you take the pitifully few minutes that it takes to do this after each round you play, I absolutely promise you that your game will improve over time.

Try this, I know you'll like it!.
