========================================================

I have two thoughts for having more fun when we get back to golf here in the Northeast in 2021:
  1. Play a longer shaft on your driver, as in a 48" shaft. Hitting it further off the tee means shorter yardage to the hole, which means more greens hit and lower scores. That's more fun. More details on a 48" driver here: Newsletter Issue 637

  2. Play the right tees. This will help you to be closer to the hole on your approach shots, which means more greens hit and lower scores. That's more fun.
PLAY THE RIGHT TEES

Unless you are a professional golfer or playing in a competitive tournament, the main goal for every round should be to have fun, and a big part of having fun means selecting the correct tees to play from.

It's key to pay less attention to the tee color and more attention to the yardage.

If you're a candidate for moving to more forward tees, start paying attention to the yardage from the tees you play starting with the next round you play. The white or blue tee distances on one course might not equate to the same color tee distances on another course. In fact, sometimes the difference is a very large number.

The place where I play most often, The Batavia Country Club, is a perfect example. Their white tee yardage at 6,533 yards, is about the same as (or in some instances longer) than several local courses blue tees yardage.

GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING THE RIGHT TEES FOR YOU

There are a number of ways to decide which yardage and tee you should play from. The PGA of America offers a guideline chart to allow golfers to reference their driving distance, which then recommends total course yardage.

For those golfers that fall into the category of playing yardage that might not be available on the scorecard, choose the shorter yardage (see Scottish caddy saying below). As mentioned earlier, unless you are playing in a competitive round being ruled by a governing body, you should be making decisions to have fun.

IRON DISTANCE FORMULA FOR PICKING THE RIGHT TEES

Another popular formula for selecting the correct set of tees to play from is based on 5-iron distance, if you do not use a 5-iron specifically, you can reference your 5-hybrid or a 9-wood.

5 iron distance X 36 = the total yardage for the tees to play

By using this method to select the correct yardage, you will be put in a position to hit similar approach shots into greens as other players that might be playing from different yardage. For example, if a golfer playing from the middle tees on a par 3 is hitting a 7-iron, you should also be playing from a yardage that allows you to a 7-iron or equivalent club, give or take one club up or down.

Here's an old Scottish caddy saying that wraps up this philosophy:

"Let’s start at the forward yardage, and if we’re having too much fun and making too many birdies, we can move back one"
