Tom's Featured Tip: Short Putts - Firm or Die It At The Hole?

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Todays tip is short but sweet. Work this mindset into your game and reap the benefits.

Have you ever noticed that most PGA and LPGA players seem to hit short putts very firmly?

I teach my students to hit their short putts firmly to overcome the subtle humps around the edge of the hole that might cause them to lip out or to veer off line and miss the hole. That's because most of my students play at courses where the playing public places their foot two inches from the edge of the cup when they retrieve their ball after holing a putt. This eventually causes a doughnut-like hump to develop around the hole. It's enough to cause a slow rolling putt to veer off line.

The pro's play under such pristine conditions that they don't ever have to worry about that problem, but there's another good reason that they strike their short putts firmly.

If this seems counterintuitive to you because if they do lip out, they are likely to have a much longer return putt, read on. There is actually some science behind "drilling" short putts into the hole.

The speed of a firm putt, where the ball hits the back wall of the cup, an inch or so below the lip is about 1.5 mph. This speed may have to be tempered based on other factors such as the green speed and conditions around the hole to ensure that a return missed putt remains in the sinkable range.

A little known phenomenon that has to be accounted for is that for breaking putts the last twelve inches the putt will break the most due to the precession of the rolling ball as it slows down and the sideway torque. To avoid this, the ball needs to be rolling a bit faster than "die it at the hole" speed for breaking putts.

So to prevent the ball from breaking at its maximum rate, get it into the hole before it slows to a dead stop.

My definitive advice is that hitting a breaking putt firmly is better and less consequential than dieing it at the hole. You will generally need to play less break and not give up the hole, so understand and practice that also.

And as far as I'm concerned hit your short straight putts firmly too, it overcomes the "doughnut" effect.

After all is said and done, is there ANYTHING more frustrating in golf than leaving a put on the edge of the hole?

Adopt the mindset and practice this a lot this winter and you'll thank me in the spring.

Try this, you'll really like it!
