Muddy Lies
I've been visiting my brother in Florida for about a week, and I'm heading home tomorrow. I had the chance to play a little golf, but ran into muddy conditions one day and that inspired today's tip about short game shots in muddy conditions.
For my own full swings in muddy conditions, I normally get relatively good contact because my personal default setup has a lot of my weight forward and staying there through my backswing and downswing.
So that's a nugget of information for muddy conditions for full swings - keep your weight a little more forward to insure that your swing low point falls forward of the ball. In fact, if the location of the bottom of your swing arc is past the ball then you can deal with pretty much any lie.
When it comes to the short game, however, there are different ways to approach muddy ground conditions. There are a number of swing and club adjustments that can be implemented to reduce the chance of unintentionally hitting the ball fat (striking the ground before the ball).
These include using a hybrid, a chipper or even your putter, but that doesn't mean that you should ignore developing the skill to strike a solid chip from the mud.
This involves a detailed understanding of specifically how you intend the club to interact with the ground, which for muddy conditions also includes using the bounce of your club.
- One way is to
- Set up with your weight well forward (80-20 favoring the front),
- with a lot of forward shaft lean,
- and take a steep angle of attack into the ball.
It's a good way to chip, but there's not much margin for error with this technique. If your strike is the least bit behind the ball, you could bury the leading edge of the clubface into the mud.
- Perhaps a safer way to chip from the mud - and with a higher trajectory - is:
- Set up with no shaft lean,
- weight 50-50,
- club contact with the ground about an inch behind the ball with an open face,
- then intentionally slide the bounce of the club under the ball WITHOUT FLINCHING and
- skid the club along the ground under the ball.
It's similar to a sand bunker swing.
Try it, you'll like it.
