3 Great Indoor/Outdoor Putting Drills

I had a couple of recent inquiries about how to practice putting indoors over the winter.

I think there's still plenty of outdoor golf time this year, but here are some drills that can be done indoors or outdoors that will make you a great putter if you put in the practice time.

As far as putting mats goes, there are many, many choices out there so it comes down to how much you want to spend.

A 4' x 10' piece of indoor outdoor carpeting with a portable putting hole (google it, they range dramatically in price) works just fine, as does an SKLZ Accelerator Pro Indoor Putting Green with Ball Return - Amazon $50.

If you want something better, Big Moss is a brand I'd recommend, as is Pro Putt Systems.

Note that you do not need to practice breaking putts, your focus should be on stroking a straight putt on your intended aimline.

Practicing any breaking putt indoors can be deceiving because you'll always be at the same speed.

Your aimline during actual play for that same length breaking putt will likely vary due to the speed of the green on that particular day.

Keep in mind that uphill or downhill will also change the aimline and ball speed for the same length breaking putt.

Your indoor putting practice should be focused on these three skills:
  1. stroke path
  2. aimline accuracy
  3. nailing down a "stock putting stroke" length and weight
These extremely simple drills can be done indoors or outdoors on any putting surface or indoor outdoor carpeting.

Stroke Path

For this drill all you need is a couple of 2" x 4" boards, about 18" or so in length.

Simply set up the boards as guide rails:

and practice a stroke that travels as much straight back and straight through as you can make it. Practice the stroke with or without a ball.

The reason I favor that stroke path is that it gives you the best chance to
  1. present the putterface square to your aimline
  2. with optimal compression at impact.

If you can do those two things, your roll will be consistent with, and directly related to, the weight (power) you use to accelerate the clubhead into the ball.

Aimline Accuracy

It's critical to be able to start the ball on the aimline that you want the ball to follow.

To practice this, use the 2" x 4" boards again, but this time space the ends so that there is a 2" gap between the boards,

Mark a spot 18" away from the gap and stroke putts through the hole from that 18" distance. If you can putt a 1.68" ball though a 2" space from 18" with consistency, you absolutely will be able to start your ball on your intended aimline when you play.

Stock Putting Stroke

You will be able to calibrate the power you need to add or to subtract from your stroke from different distances if you own your stock putting stroke.

A stock putting stroke is a stroke that travels a certain distance on the backswing and the through swing with a pendulum stroke and consistent weight (power). This stroke will produce a consistent rollout, and you utilize that stock stroke to take ten back and forth putts on a neutral grain spot on the practice green of a course that you are playing that day.

This gives you a feel for how far your stock putting stroke is sending the ball on that green, on that day. Your , brain can then optimize your stroke length for longer or shorter putts.

One caveat - check with the pro shop to confirm that the greens on the course are about the same speed as the practice green.

This has worked magnificently for me personally, and also for my students that have worked at it.

It's a game changer.

This setup uses my trusty 2" x 4" boards again, with another 2" x 4" board placed on its side 9" behind the rear of my putter, to constrain my backswing to 9". I've had great success with my students with an 8" or 9" stock stroke length.

Simply keep stroking putts until the backswing length feels natural without hitting the constraint board, and be sure to let pendular momentum power stroke the putt, not arm or hand drive.

This drill will work wonders for your game.

When you get proficient at each drill, you can combine them:

like the aimline accuracy or guide rail drill with a constraint board 8" or 9" behind your putter.

Try these drills, you'll like them.
