Tom's Featured Tip: Clubface Contact Problem - It's Not Always What You Think It Is For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective. I had a long time student contact me and tell me that he was hitting the ball inside of center on the face of his driver, more towards the hosel than the center of the face. In the past I noticed that his swing radius changed with his driver, and I figured that was causing the heel hit again. This is a major distance robber, and will also cause inconsistent starting direction. I told him to get a pool noodle, point it in the direction of his target, and to secure it to the ground with a few tees. Then I told him to tee a ball about an inch or so away from the pool noodle and make driver swings. This is called constraint based training, where you position an obstacle to force a correct result. If he hit the pool noodle, either his path or swing radius needed to be corrected. After enough repetitions, the obstacle is removed, and hopefully a new neural pathway is developed in your brain so that you can repeat the correct movement. This works every time for this type of problem - except for this time. This particular student practices diligently, so I was surprised when he called me and said that he did as told but was still making heel strikes with his driver. But then he said something that explained it. He also said that he was positioning the pool noodle to give him an inside attack angle. In other words, it was pointing right of the target, not down the line. Now it makes total sense to get double bang out of a drill if you can, but what happened here was that it masked the problem. The inside path influenced the student to hold the face open longer, and as a result he was presenting the face of his driver open to the ball, and heel first. He was missing the pool noodle because the face wasn't square at impact and it left room for the club to pass without hitting the pool noodle. So his problem could either be an open face at contact or an extended swing radius, or both. The slight variance of the pool noodle direction changed everything by introducing another variable. I do my best to help my long time students over the phone, but this will require a lesson to make the corrections, so we scheduled one. The moral of the story is this: if you are correcting your own swing problems, take care to do corrective drills exactly as explained. It's a great idea to get double bang out of a drill, but sometimes it can obstruct the cure. Try it, you'll like it.
