Tom's Featured Tip: Putting Priorities

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

You may have heard or read that the most important thing in putting is speed.

Speed is always a consideration, but more so for long lag putts than for short makeable putts. At least that's my opinion.

The average PGA Tour Pro makes 50% of his putts from 8 feet from the hole. He makes a lower percentage as the ball gets further from the hole, and a higher percentage closer to the hole.

In my heart I believe that percentage of makes is an attainable standard for just about anyone that's willing to put in the practice.

When you practice very short putts - in the three to five foot range - as long as you look at a spot along your aimline, about 4 inches past the hole, you will rarely get the speed wrong. Most misses from that range are due to the clubface pointing in the wrong direction.

From that distance, having and keeping your clubface square to the correct aimline with a straight back and straight through stroke trumps speed considerations.

Here's a link to a video for a drill done with my SquareStrike™ Training Aid to groove a stroke that works like a charm for short putts:

On the other hand, from 25 feet from the hole the average PGA Tour Pro makes the putt 2.5% of the time, but they also three putt 2.5% of the time. So from that distance speed considerations are a top priority.

Here's a link to a video for a drill done with my SquareStrike™ Training Aid to practice a technique that helps develop speed and touch control:

Work on these drills and you'll absolutely become a better putter.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Three Rehearsal Box Keys

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Before you step in to hit your shot, into the "hitting" box, there are a few things you should do in the "rehearsal" box to give yourself a shot at success when you hit the ball.

That's the area just outside of the "hitting" box, sometimes also referred to as the "practice" box.

Here are three things that can be done in the rehearsal box to prepare your brain and body for a good swing - and don't dawdle - do them quickly.
  1. Mentally rehearse any swing keys that you are currently working on. Such as a tempo mantra like "swing back - pause - swing through", or "tuck right elbow on backswing", etc. Limit your thoughts to ony one or two swing keys when you are actually playing a round of golf.

  2. Next take a practice swing or two, one slow motion one normal speed. Lots of players take a practice swing but they make a crucial mistake - they don't focus on a precise spot on the ground that would simulate their ball position. Research shows us that if we take a random practice swing that's not aimed at something to hit, the clubface will be about 15 degrees open. So that type of a practice swing is actually very counterproductive. Always have a target like a blade of grass or chunk of dirt that you are focusing on with your practice swing. In other words, make sure you hit something with your practice swing, and pay attention to where your club hits the ground it's an iron swing.

  3. Release your head when you make contact, but release it with a neck swivel not a lift. Don't try to keep your head down with either your practice swing or your actual swing, it's counterproductive. It causes tension; eventually you'll develop a neck problem; and it inhibits a full swing with a naturally closing clubface. Releasing your head with a swiveling motion after impact promotes a strong move through the ball. Never try to keep your head down after the strike, allow your head to swivel and follow the ball flight.
Do these three things (rapidly) in the rehearsal box, and you'll find more consistency in the hitting box.

All the best,

Tom
