    Swing Speed Tips For Longer Drives

    Here are a few concepts that you can work into your round before you tee off to help you hit longer drives.

    =========================================

    Before I get into that, I have to share some sage advice that I got from my playing partner last Sunday during our round.

    I mentioned quite loudly (and profanely) that I was having trouble getting the ball to the hole with my putts.

    His reply was "hit the ball harder".

    It worked. 😄 😄 😄

    =========================================

    Swing Speed Tips For Longer Drives

    1. Flex Your Thoracic Spine Before You Get To The First Tee.

      Do this before every round: Thoracic Spine Matrix Stretch

    2. Flex Your Body Actively before You Tee Off.

      You can do this on the tee, or at the range or before you get to the first tee.

      Make some slow, exaggerated golf swings with your driver. Turn your shoulders as far as comfortably possible. Rotate your hips. Gradually increase the speed and length of the movements.

      The last four driver swings should be at max speed.

      The max speed driver swings can be repeated at every tee to remind yourself to swing fast.

    3. Tee The Ball Higher

      Tee the ball up so that roughly half the golf ball sits above the top of your driver when the club is resting on the ground.

      Then try to hit slightly up on the ball, and try to make ball contact with the clubface slightly above the horizontal face of the driver. That ball-clubface contact location gives you the best gear effect advantage with a driver.

    4. Think "Swing Fast - Not Hard"

      This frame of mind produces a better neural adaptation for speed than thinking "hit it hard".

      Actually trying to "hit it hard" produces a tight grip, tension in the upper torso, and the dumping of accumulated power too early in the downswing. Sometimes dumping your power too early is caused by a backswing that is too long. If that's you, experiment with a shorter backswing to help you retain your accumulated power longer into your downswing transition.

      The speed-power concept is to release the accumulated power at the strike.

      Grip the club a little lighter and think about releasing your accumulated power about halfway into your downswing.

      Make a few practice swings and listen for the speed "swoosh" at, or past, the low point of your swing.
    You'll be surprised how much faster you can swing when you're not trying to force speed.

    So before your next round, remember these four things:
    1. Stretch your thoracic spine.
    2. Actively flex your body - slow to fast motion, then four max speed driver swings
    3. Tee it higher, hit up slightly on the ball
    4. Create your speed at the ball, not too early in your downswing transition.
    Try it, you'll like it!
