Don't Hit It In The Water

“The trouble informs your strategy. Your intention plays the shot." - David MacKenzie

Here's what I hear often from the guys I play with, as well as from students: instead of having a clear intention for what they want to do, their mind is occupied by what they don't want to happen:
    • Don't hit it in the water.
    • Don't hit it left.
    • Don't leave this in the bunker.
    • Don't three-putt this green.
    • Don't make another double.
    Your Words Direct Your Attention

The language you use before a shot matters because it influences what you focus on and how you feel.

Tell yourself a negative thought and where does your attention go? To the negative thought, and your body may well respond to the outcome you're imagining.

In other words, the very thought you're using to protect yourself from the outcome can create a state that makes it harder to execute the shot freely.

If you had a great caddie with you as you play, he or she would have you do these three things before every shot:
    1. Assess the danger.
    2. Choose the strategy.
    3. Commit to the shot.
Pay attention to the language you're using before your shots.

When you notice your mind drifting towards the miss, the hazard, your score, or what you desperately don't want to happen, bring it back to one question:

"What am I trying to do with this shot?"

Make your intention simple, positive and specific, then step in and commit.

For your next round, pay close attention to what you're telling yourself before each shot.

Whenever you notice an avoidance thought like:
    • Don't hit it left.
    • Don't leave it short.
    • Don't three putt.
Stop and ask yourself: “What would a great caddie tell me right now?”

Then give yourself a clear, positive intention for the shot:
    1. Choose your target - Where exactly are you trying to send the ball?
    2. Picture the shot - What does the flight, shape, landing spot or roll look like?
    3. Give yourself one clear instruction - “Start it at the right edge.” “Land it on that spot.” “Roll it over that mark.”
    4. Commit - Once the decision is made, let the strategy go and play the shot.
Your goal is to become more aware of where you're directing your attention and get better at giving your mind a clear instruction before every shot.

    Try it, you'll like it!
