SyberVision and Iron Byron I can say with 100% certainty that if you make a habit of watching one or two of the videos listed towards the end of this newsletter regularly, that your release timing as well as your overall swing absolutely will improve. Lately I've been swinging across the ball instead of making a more forward strike, causing an undesirable fade curvature. In an attempt to reform my swing in my brain, I've been reviewing my Stack and Tilt 2.0 videos. During that process, I saw an interview with Al Geiberger, who loved one of the 38 minute video segments that showed swings only, no narrative. The reason that this particular training video was so appealing to Al, was that he was chosen to represent the model swing for a SyberVision video in 1984. The link to that full video is last on the list below, it's 58 minutes long, but it's really worth watching - especially if you are trying to re-imagine your own swing. Al Geiberger earned the legendary nickname "Mr. 59" on June 10, 1977, when he became the first golfer to shoot a sub-60 round (13-under 59) in PGA Tour history. His swing was pristine. SyberVision was a popular 1980s instructional video and self-improvement system that used visual modeling and "neuro-muscular programming" to help people learn physical and mental skills. It's currently called "observational learning" and I'm a deep believer in that. I used it as the primary teaching tool for my Junior Golf Camps, as young players are prime prospects for that type of skill development. Very little audible instruction, a lot of the kids watching me swing a club - face on, and down the line, then the students replicating what I did. It proved to be very effective. I've used it with great success on some adult students also, with the caveat that some adults need more structure, so verbal instruction is blended in. Back to the present. I've been watching at the "swings only" video four to five times per week while I'm pedaling on my Schwinn Airdyne, and I'm seeing where I need to change. I also took it a step further than my own training videos by googling "Iron Byron" to see how that machine was releasing power at impact. As a result, I'm making a change in my release timing after seeing several swing comparisons. As I said before, I can say with 100% certainty that if you make a habit of watching one or two of these videos regularly, that your release timing as well as your overall swing absolutely will improve. I know from other research, that fully concentrating and thinking deeply about a physical motion can produce a neural adaptation that affects the actual physical change. Here are several Iron Byron (IB) swings, some solo, some with comparisons with pro golfers. Most are "shorts" unless otherwise noted. The first two are the ones that I'm watching regularly. Pick one or two for yourself and watch them regularly to see vast improvement: IB and Tiger, shorts For my own swing, this video reinforced the "stalling" of the shoulder and hip rotation to allow the arms and hands to release powerfully into the back of the ball. Cracking the whip, so to speak. IB face on and down the line, shorts IB single plane swing, shorts IB & Ben Hogan, 16 seconds IB and Rory, shorts IB and Bobby Jones, shorts IB and Mike Austin, 2 minutes 51 seconds SyberVision Golf - short iron, 6 minutes SYBERVISION: Neuro-Muscular Programming - GOLF with Al Geiberger (1983, VHS) 58 minutes SyberVision Golf - Full Video Try it, you'll like it!
