Don't Believe Everything You See On YouTube

In my soon to be 80 years of life, before and after YouTube and Google, I've developed a deep level of knowledge and expertise on a few different subjects: Photography (I had a photography studio for about 13 years in the late '90's and early 2000's), Golf, Fitness, Nutrition, and last but not least - Poker 😄

I'm a night owl, so during the golf season, I find myself on YouTube late at night clicking on a lot of golf videos. As a golf professional (not professional golfer, that's something different), I like to stay current with new equipment, swing theory, course management, and the mental side of the game.

Because I have a pretty good depth of knowledge on golf related information, I can usually separate the wheat from the chaff, and it REALLY irks me when I see an instructor teaching something as gospel, when there are a lot of ways to skin the cat in golf.

What prompted this article was an instructor working with a right handed female student that was hitting it fat, thin, and to the right.

She had been shifting weight to her forward side during her backswing, then shifting more in her downswing, and also presenting the clubface to the ball with an open face during the impact interval.

For what it's worth, the way she was shifting her weight is a classic way to play golf with a swing that relies more on rotation that coiling for power. It's a method that I actually use a lot when I teach because it's easy on the body.

Here's a clip of Mike Bennet hitting 17 perfect shots in a row, shifting his weight forward during his backswing:
Mike Bennett 6 iron swings (1 min.)

Correcting her problem should have been an easy fix:
    1. A touch less weight on the left side during the backswing, but increasing to about 85% weight on the left side at impact
    2. Correct her swing arc depth through impact (I utilize drills for that, including getting a Divot Board)
    3. Strengthen her grip slightly to facilitate the clubface closing at impact
    4. Getting a little more depth in the backswing by straightening the rear knee in the backswing, which adds speed and power into the downswing
Instead, this instructor pronounced the weight transferring to the front side during the backswing as a reverse weight shift, which is absolutely ridiculous.

It only shifted forward, and never shifted backward during her swing sequence.

Next he had her shifting weight into her rear side during the backswing, accompanied by leaning slightly toward the rear side, maintaining flex in her rear knee.

This method of coiling in the backswing, is neither right nor wrong, it's just another way to execute a golf swing.

What I don't like about this method is:
    • the axis of the swing moves around during the backswing, I prefer it to be stable
    • the weight that shifts forward during the downswing has to be precise, I prefer less moving parts
    • coiling is eventually hard on the back, I believe that to be unnecessary if there's another good way to add power to the downswing
I'm not necessarily upset about this instructor changing most of what she was doing, what irks me is him proclaiming something as wrong, when it's simply a different, but valid, way of doing it.

The bottom line is to know your own swing, and don't change anything because you saw something on YouTube - unless it pertains to what you are currently doing wrong within your own swing style.

    Try it, you'll like it!
