The Two Most Important Elements For Better Putting

I gave a putting lesson last Wednesday to a player who told me that he three-putts five or six times in a 9 hole round of golf. During the lesson we concentrated on the elements I'm mentioning in this article, and also made a couple adjustments to his grip to lock his wrists out of his putting stroke.

He was playing the next day, and he called me after his round and was ELATED to tell me that he had ZERO three-putts during his 9 hole league play!

So the proof is in the pudding, as they say.

Most golfers try to fix the wrong things. Tempo, arc, release. All of that matters, but the stroke can only repeat if the conditions around it stay stable. When setup is consistent and the momentum (force applied) to the ball is predictable, putting gets significantly simpler.
    1. Setup is the first element, and it's not as complicated as most players think. Consistency rules. Settle on eye position and posture, then - most importantly - align your ball mark with your aimline.

How To Mark Your Ball For Perfect Putting Alignment

Even if eye position and posture shift slightly from putt to putt, as long as you keep your head still and your face square to your aimline, you'll make a lot of makeable putts.

Path is not unimportant, but it's much less important than face alignment with your aimpoint, especially on short putts.

    2. The second element is Distance Control.

You need to stroke several putts of varying distances on the practice green to gauge the speed of the green on the day you are playing. Always ask the Pro Shop if the speed of the greens on the course are the same as the putting green.

If you have a good pendulum stroke that allows your shoulders to rock the putter back and forth, and if you strike the center of the ball with the center of the clubface, you will get a consistent rollout for the length of the stroke you make. Dead hands, shoulder power only. Longer putts, longer stroke. Shorter putts, shorter stroke.
When you start from the same setup and move the putter on a reasonable path, the face returns to square at impact more predictably. As a result, the ball starts on your aimline, and distance becomes easier to control.

Narrow your focus to these two elements, and your putting will improve dramatically.

    Try it, you'll like it!
