    Feeling Pressure? Walk The Plank

So you're looking at the title of today's article, and you're wondering "is Tom telling me to give up when I feel pressure on the course"?

Well .... of course I'm not, just the opposite actually!

There are times when we feel some level of pressure when we play, like when we need to make a five foot putt to win a Nassau bet.

And then there are times when we feel extreme pressure, such as competing in a Club Championship or other important medal play Tournament.

Whenever you fall into the "feeling pressure" category, as most of us do in situations as described above, the "walk the plank" mindset should help you feel more grounded when pressure creeps in.

Walking The Plank and Pressure - Here's The Analogy

Imagine that you have to walk the length of a two and a half foot wide, eight foot long plank in the following scenarios:
    1. The plank is lying on the ground - no problem, you walk freely, probably could do it with your eyes closed.

    2. The plank is suspended two feet off the ground - not much of a problem, still a pretty free walk.

    3. The plank is suspended twelve feet off the ground - this poses quite a bit of a concern, nerves start to set in, you walk much more carefully, paying attention to every step.

    4. The plank is suspended fifty feet off the ground - this poses maximum concern, tension sets in, you may even drop down to your hands and knees, crawling along and gripping tightly. A pretty natural response for most of us.
One and two above represent your normal round with your weekend foursome.

Three represents playing with a few bucks on the line.

Four represents a Club Championship or other Tournament with a lot on the line.

When you find yourself in a situation with pressure like number four, think about all of the plank situations, and do your best to convince yourself to "walk the plank" like it's on the ground.

Meaning this: breathe naturally, relax your body AND your grip, and swing freely.

    This really works like magic.

    Try it, you'll like it!
