How To Correct Your Slice

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

A slice is the most common, frustrating, and distance-robbing shot in golf for amateurs, causing the ball to curve heavily to the right (for a right-handed golfer).

It occurs because the clubface is open relative to the club path at impact, which creates excessive side-spin.

Fixing a slice requires changing how your hands interact with the club and how the club approaches the ball.

Here is a guide to curing your slice, starting with the fastest fixes.
  1. The Immediate Fixes: Grip and Setup

Before changing your swing motion, adjust your setup. These small tweaks often yield instant results.

    • Strengthen Your Grip: A "weak" grip (where your hands are rotated too far toward the target) is the primary cause of an open clubface. To fix this, rotate both hands to the right so that you can see two to three knuckles on your left hand at address.

    • Check the Right Hand: Ensure your right hand is underneath the club, rather than on top. This helps close the face naturally.

    • Adjust Ball Position: Move the ball slightly back in your stance (closer to the center) to give the clubhead more time to close before impact.

    • Straighten Your Alignment: Many slicers aim far left to compensate, which actually forces an "outside-in" swing path that makes the slice worse. Align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to the target line, or even slightly closed.

  2. The Mechanics Inside-Out Swing Path - slice is caused by an "out-to-in" path (swinging across the ball). To cure it, you must develop an "inside-out" path.

    • Drop the Right Elbow: On the downswing, feel like your right elbow stays close to your right hip. If your right elbow flies away from your body, it forces the club over the top.

    • Let the Arms Fall: Instead of pulling the club down with your arms and shoulders first, let your arms "drop" while your lower body initiates the downswing (shifting weight to the left).

    • "Swing Towards the Curve": If the ball is slicing to the right, aim your swing path more towards the right side of the fairway to combat the left-to-right motion.

  3. Drills to Correct the Slice. Practice these drills on the range to burn the motion into your brain.

    • The Headcover Drill (Path Fix): Place a headcover (or golf ball box) just outside the target line, a few inches behind your ball. If you swing out-to-in, you will hit the headcover. This forces you to swing from the inside.

    • The "Right Foot Back" Drill (Path Fix): Take your normal stance, then move your trail (right) foot 3–4 inches back. This automatically forces an inside-out swing path.

    • The Slow-Motion Swing: Practice slow-motion swings to feel the correct, closed clubface position at impact.

  4. Equipment Adjustments. Sometimes, your gear really is working against you.

    • Increase Loft: Slicers often use low-loft drivers, which accentuate side-spin.

    • Switch to a driver with more loft (e.g., 10.5 or 12 degrees).

    • Use Draw-Biased Clubs: Modern drivers often have adjustable weights. Move the weight toward the heel to help the toe close faster.

Try it, you'll really like it!
