![]() This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own. Tiny Foot Position Change - Massive Ball Flight Effect For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective. I recently had a low handicap player come to me because his normal draw curvature had turned into a fade. It was playable, but the loss of distance was a problem. He was now using a rescue club instead of an iron for some of his approach shots, which effected his accuracy. After watching him hit ten balls, we figured out the problem - which was actually twofold:
One of his problems was that he was initiating his downswing without any weight transfer at all. He was doing it with shoulders only, which in and of itself will cause an outside to inside swing path, which is a recipe for a slice or fade. A shoulder turn to start his downswing was caused mentally from his loss of distance, and the feel to make up for it by rushing his downswing. I had him hit several shots with weight transfer initiating his downswing, and his fade now turned into a straight ball that started left and stayed left. This means that the face was now square to the path at impact. So his swing circle was pointing left at impact, which led to the other reason for his fade. He had been setting up with the toe of his forward foot turned open, but with his rear foot square to the target tline. This isn't actually an open stance, but without a disciplined downswing transition it can cause a curvature problem. The reason is that when you have a front foot that is open, without the back foot being open to the same degree, it can cause your swing circle to point left of your target line on your downswing. With a good player, the brain won't allow your hands to release properly when your swing is on that path because you'd hit a horrible hook, so you end up with a weak, "hang on" fade, which was the player's problem exactly. Afer I had him set up with both toes open an equal amount, and with a weight transfer initiating his downswing, he hit 7 out of 10 draws. The other 3 shots were straight left pulls, where he didn't shift his weight properly on the downswing - but they didn't fade. The Takeaway
