Simple Shank Fix Drill

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

==========================================

I recently had a lesson with a student that was plagued by the shanks with his wedge, where he was striking the ball with the hosel of his club (near the shaft) instead of on the face. A shank may be only about 1/4" away from a good shot, so it doesn't require a major swing change to fix, it's actually much simpler than that if you know what to do.

I had him do a drill that produced variable face strikes that solved his problem almost immediately, but it was done a little differently than you might imagine.

Variable face strikes means that you would intentionally try to hit the ball
  • towards the heel of the clubface
  • towards the toe of the clubface
  • and in the center of the clubface.
However, instead of asking the student to strike the ball with the toe, heel, or center of the clubface, my verbal instruction was as follows:
  • To strike the ball near the toe of the club, I asked him to swing the club a little closer to his body, which produced a toe bias strike,
  • or a little further away from his body, which produced a heel bias strike.
That worked like magic, and we eventually discovered (GOLF IS A GAME OF DISCOVERY) that if he swung the club just a little closer to his body, he was producing center face strikes consistently.

Here's why this approach works.

By shifting his aimpoint, he affected where he presented the club in space.

Intention will automatically change the mechanics. You don't need to think about changing your swing mechanics every time you are experiencing a swing problem.

For example, if you had a basket 10 ft away and wanted to toss a golf ball into it at a low trajectory, your instinctive mechanics will allow that to happen. Then if you try to toss the ball into the basket at a higher trajectory, your instinctive mechanics of your arm movement and ball release change automatically to allow that to happen.

All without thinking about it, it's automatic.

In golf, it's often desirable to use your instinct and not be overly "mechanics bound".

Task led focus (external focus) as opposed to movement led focus (internal focus) allows us to have better control.

The takeaway is to use aim and intention to positively affect the outcome.
  • understand what to do
  • focus on it directly
  • practice it
Do this drill reguarly for face contact control and your ball striking will stay sharp.

Try it, you'll really like it.
