Driver Lesson - Student Notes

I conducted an indoor lesson on the simulator at the Game of Throws Indoor Simulator yesterday with a very good player that I've been coaching for several years.

I think that what we covered may be beneficial to a lot of you, so with his permission, his lesson notes are below.

Lesson notes - I create a personal web page for my lessons students and post comments after each lesson for their historical reference.

Swing technique reference - I teach an inside to inside swing with weight forward bias.
  • Weight forward bias means that my students start their stock swings with more weight on their lead side than their trail side. Their proportion is based on my assessment of what they need. It should be noted that a strong torso rotation is necessary with a weight forward bias swing method.

  • Inside to inside swing means a swing circle that travels on a downward and outward path while staying inside the target line, reaches it's outward peak at the target line and is flat for a moment, then travels inward and upward to a finish. I sometimes refer to this as down and to the right (outward) then up and to the left (inward).

Here are my student's lesson comments:

Lesson Comments
  1. Grip. We revisited grip fundamentals as follows:
    • Lead hand grip - it's imperative that the grip sits partially in the fingers, partially in the palm, with the heel pad on the top of the golf club. Lead hand is way more important than the trail hand.
    • Trail hand - just basically grip it in the fingers. Your choice on interlock, overlap, or ten fingers..

  2. Driver. We worked on getting the correct position for your ball with your driver, executing a correct downswing sequence. finishing with your posture more upright and tilted (not bending forward from the waist), and maintaining a still head.
  • Correct Ball Position. We discovered that when we had the ball positioned too far forward in your stance, and that you were catching it past where your outward swing had reached its apex. You were catching it too much on the inward and upward portion of your swing circle and that produced a shot that started too far left with an outside in path and a closed face. Not good.

We corrected that by moving the ball back to about 1" inside your left heel instead of at your left heel. and also closing your stance about 1".

  • Downswing Sequence. The downswing should start with a lateral hip slide, followed by a combination of slide and rotation. We had been concentrating so much on a strong rotation that the slide to initiate the downswing wasn't occurring in the correct sequence. The result contributed to your occasional outside in swing path with a closed face.

We corrected that by emphasizing the lateral hip slide starting just prior to your rotation on your downswing.

  • Finishing With Taller (but still tilted) posture. When you were finishing with a slight forward bend at the waist, it caused a strike that flew too low (10* launch angle) I want your launch angle with your driver to be a minimum of 14*. It also caused an inconsistent ball flight direction.

We corrected that with a strong lateral hip slide which contributed to a taller posture at your finish as long as you kept your head still, meaning no lateral slide of the head when your hips slide laterally forward.

The bonus benefit was that your launch angle got significantly higher when you kept your head still.

Here are your swing keys for all swings - note that you may or may not need the "catch rain" with your irons, you need to discover that for yourself:
  1. Hip slide
  2. Inside out path
  3. Catch rain (rotating the left hand towards an upward facing palm through the strike)
  4. Still head
Keep practicing that new drill: Video - The Head Against The Wall Drill with that plane stick set up to monitor your hip slide.
When you do the drill, make it for 2 continuous minutes per session, that way you won't wear a hole in your forehead. 😁

If the shoe fits for you on any of these corrections, wear it - I think you'll like it.
