Two Essential Putting Skills

There is no limit to the advice you can find online when it comes to putting, but in reality there are only a couple of "absolutely essential" skills that are necessary to become a great putter.

Putting is a very personally dependent skill that can be acquired independently from a lot of accepted "rules" for becoming a great putter.

Here's a list of generally accepted absolutes that actually may differ from golfer to golfer.
  • a specific grip
  • open, closed, or neutral stance
  • stroke path
  • point of focus
  • distance from the ball at address
Do these things matter? Yes they do, but these elements can vary from individual to individual. My feeling is that if you master the two skills below that you'll find your own correct mechanics and grip elements along the way.

Here are two skills that are absolutely essential for great putting:
  1. Owning a "stock" putting stroke that you can adjust for distance control as the length of your putt dictates. This skill is critical for longer "lag" putts.

  2. Presenting the putter face to the ball square to your target line. This skill is critical for holing out "makeable" length putts.
That's it, it's no more complicated than that, but it's also easier said than done.

Here are a couple of things you can do that can help you develop the two skills listed above.
  1. You can build a "stock" putting stroke by practicing a stroke that travels the exact same length with the same weight (power) every time. When you master that stroke, you then vary the length of the stroke to allow for longer or shorter putts.

  2. You can build a stroke that helps square the face to your target line by having a stroke that has minimal or no arc.

I have most of my students "crowd the ball" meaning standing closer to the ball at address than they might normally stand. This allows for a more vertical stroke, which has less arc and makes it easier to present the face square to the target at impact. I also have my students feel like the putter head swing path is moving straight back and straight through, even though the path may be slightly arcing.
And for what it's worth mallet putters are more forgiving than blades.

Own these two skills and I guarantee that your putting will improve.

If you want some personal instruction to help you improve your putting, schedule a putting lesson with me and I'll get you moving in the right direction. My indoor lesson slots are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 9am, 10am, and 11am.

Try it, you'll like it.
