Swing Speed Training Results

Last week I finished the first scheduled four session group swing speed training class.

The supervised sessions ran for four weeks from Wednesday December 7, to Wednesday December 28, 2022 with homework assignments in between. The total swing speed training sessions were 4 supervised sessions with 8 additional at home unsupervised sessions in between, and four additional at home unsupervised sessions.

The particiants were also provided with an outline to maintain, and/or improve on, their swing speed gains.

I had five student participants, each of whom were in better than average physical condition:
  • Student A - a late 30's female, high handicap.
  • Student B - a late 40's female, high handicap.
  • Student C - a late 50's male, 9 handicap.
  • Student D - a 43 yr. old male, 1 handicap.
  • Student X - me - a 76 yr. old male, 4 handicap.
The swing speed training tools that I used were Rypstick's for three of the students, and one student had his own Superspeed training sticks.

At the first session, I weighed each student's driver to fit them to the proper load for their Rypstick for the overspeed and overload training drills we would be doing. Then I had each student make 5 driver swings as fast as they could to get a baseline fast swing speed for each student.

Each of the sessions were comprised of warmup exercises, various overload and overspeed swing drills, and a warmdown. Session four included a warmup, then 5 driver swings as fast as they could to note any swing speed gains, then the drills and warmdown.

Increasing your strength is a positive factor for increasing your swing speed. After session 4, the participants were given a strength training program recommendation to implement as they see fit.

Week 4 Swing Speed Training Results - before the week 4 workout.
Keep in mind that a 1 mph gain on speed equals 2.5 to 3 yards of carry.
  • Student A - late 30's female, high handicap. Swing speed gain of 10 mph, equal to approximately 25 to 30 more yards of carry off the tee.

  • Student B - mid 40's female, high handicap. Swing speed gain of 11 mph, equal to approximately 27.5 to 33 more yards of carry off the tee.

  • Student C - a late 50's male, 9 handicap. Swing speed gain of 6.5 mph, equal to approximately 16 to 19 more yards of carry off the tee.

  • Student D - 43 yr. old male, 1 handicap. Negligible swing speed gain, but note that he started with a PGA tour level swing speed of 111 mph.

  • Student X - me - 76 yr old male, 4 handicap. Swing speed gain of 3 mph, equal to approximately 7.5 to 9 more yards of carry off the tee (I'll take it!).
If each student diligently completes the two additional weeks (4 sessions) of unsupervised assigned drills, I'm certain that they will show even more gains.

I was a bit disappointed that my scratch golfer didn't gain any significant speed, but I still think he can pick up a few more mph if he's willing to do the work. To be honest, he hits it so far now that it may not be worth the effort, his choice on that.

All in all I was very pleased with the results.
