Winter Practice - What To Work On

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Two Great Training Aids For Indoor or Outdoor Practice

The Divot Board

This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own.

Winter Practice - What To Work On

When I give lessons, I usually work on the three main skills that it takes to be a good player:
  1. Ground contact
  2. Curvature
  3. Swing speed
The reasons that I choose these three aspects of the swing are:
  1. Ground contact location control

In order to create proper compression at impact, you need to strike the ball squarely on your downswing before your swing bottoms out for your irons, closer to the bottom of your swing for your woods and hybrids, and slightly on then upswing for your driver.

  2. Consistent curvature

For accuracy, you need to know your shot curvature tendencies in order to hit your target.

  3. Swing speed

The first indicator of golf potential is how far you can hit the ball.
For ground contact control training, I use my Divot Board all the time for my personal practice, and I use it at every ball striking lesson. It's easy to use indoors or outdoors. It's absolutely the most useful training aid that I own, you can get one here: The Divot Board

For consistent curvature training, you need to monitor your clubface contact in relation to your swingpath. Outdoors, closely observing the direction that the ball starts and how it curves will tell the tale. In the last newsletter we talked about path and face relationship and how it causes curvature

Simply put - the ball will curve in the direction that the clubface is pointing in relation to the swingpath.
  1. Open to the path, it will curve left to right.
  2. Closed to the path it will curve right to left
  3. Square to the path, there will be no curvature
It's also helpful to video your swing from the down the line view to see the direction of your swingpath.

For indoor practice at home to monitor curvature, you would need space for a setup that would allow you to use a personal launch monitor like a Rapsodo, or a fairly expensive indoor simulator setup.

For indoor practice on a simulator, the data will give you the information that you need. Locally in Batavia, I use the simulator at The Game of Throws. You can't beat the price at $15 per hour, it's also where I give my indoor lessons on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

For swing speed training, my first concentration when I teach is on good technique. That will help you maximize your natural swing speed.

Here's an newsletter article I wrote on building more swing speed, Q&A: Swing Speed Training

Getting maximum distance is not only about technique and speed. Where the ball contacts the face of the club is also very significant. That means that you need to monitor clubface contact by spraying some Dr. Scholl's Foot Powder on the face of your club to see where contact is occurring. BUYER BEWARE - I just bought a can of spray powder made specifically for golf. As far as I can tell it's no better than Dr. Scholl's foot powder, and it was more expensive.

Stick with Dr. Scholl's, it will tell you if you are striking the ball on the sweet spot of your clubface to maximize your distance.

Here's the quick takeaway on the four things you should work on over the winter:
  1. Contacting the ball before your club strikes the ground
  2. Where the ball is contacting the cubface
  3. Where the clubface is aiming when you strike the ball
  4. Swing speed
If you are really serious about increasing your swing speed over the winter, swing speed training is available at my indoor lesson location. Please contact me - Tom Tucker - at (716) 474 3005 or email me at TomTuckerGolf@gmail.com for details if you want to pick up 10 to 20 more yards of distance off the tee.
