Distances For Effective Putting Practice

Today's newsletter contains some very useful information on the best distances for putting practice that I found in the book "Instinct Putting Revisited".

Research Associates (GRA) provides statistical performance analysis for golfers of all handicap levels. Although the GRA’s data and findings were published by Golf Magazine in 1999, no evidence has been discovered that indicates that they have significantly changed over the years.

Here are some of their findings:
  • First of all, they find little difference among golfers of all levels, from 3 feet and closer. You are almost as likely as a Tour Pro to make those putts that are "inside the leather".

  • From 10 to 20 feet most golfers two-putt most of the time.

  • From farther than 50 feet, almost all golfers are doing well to avoid a three-putt.

  • About 95% of all lag putts are from the 21 to 50 foot range.

In other words, the average amateur golfer putts almost as well as the best golfers (PGA Tour Players) in three ranges: 3 feet and in, 10-20 feet, and over 50 feet.

The crucial ranges where golfers at various handicap levels tend to differentiate themselves are from 4-10 feet, and from 21-50 feet, the "lag" range.

Let’s compare two golfers with different outing skill levels. One will represent those with handicaps from 0 to 2 (whom we'll call Scratch golfer) and the other representing those with handicaps in the 15 to 19 range (Bogey golfer).

Scratch golfer is more likely to one-putt between 4 and 10 feet, and Bogey golfer is more likely to three-putt from 21 to 50 feet.

This latter fact is especially important, given that about 95% of all lag putts fall within the 21 to 50 feet range.

So, if Bogey golfer wants to putt more like Scratch golfer, then Bogey golfer needs to one-putt more often from 4 -10 feet, and two- putt more often from 21-50 feet.

Remember that Bogey golfer is already about as good as Scratch golfer from three feet and in, and outside 50 feet. So these distances are not where most of the difference lies.

Why does Bogey golfer three-putt from 21-50 feet more often than Scratch golfer ?

The answer is distance control - or a lack thereof. According to the SHOT BY SHOT data, approximately 70% of all three putts follow a distance control error - specifically, failure to get the lag putt within 10% of the original distance.

If Bogey golfer could meet the 10% standard, a large percentage of his lag putts would finish within about three feet of the hole, from where he putts about as well as Scratch golfer.

It cannot be overemphasized that when Bogey golfer three-putts, it is usually because the lag putt is too long or short, not too far left or right of the hole.

So here's the putting practice distance takeaway - Devote most of your putting practice time to these distances:
  • 4-10 feet - strive for a high percentage of one putts.

  • 21-50 feet - strive for a high percentage of two putts, with your ball ending up within 10% of the total distance of each putt.

  • Keep track of the distance and "make" percentages for every putt, and when you practice - make each successive putt a different length to check your ability to gauge your distance control from different lengths.

Try it, you'll really like it.
