Skill Building

I get an endless stream of questions for "tips" for building a better golf swing or to cure ball flight problems.

I firmly believe that a lot of the people asking for the quick fix tips don't have a sufficient base of skill to begin with - perhaps because they really don't know how to build skill.

So today's article is a brief outline on skill building that should be helpful if your skill level isn't up to par.

If you have any questions on anything below, please shoot me an email TomTuckerGolf@gmail.com and I'll be more than happy to answer them.

We typically acquire a new physical skill in three general stages.

  • First, we present the mind with a thorough understanding of the action to be performed. This is the cognitive stage, and it precedes any actual performance. At this point we are just trying to understand how the skill should be performed, so that our mind can instruct our body how to execute it.

In the first lesson that I give a student - the Ball Striking lesson - the student and I come to a general understanding of a swing concept that fits the individual student, and it's reinforced in subsequent lessons.

In a previous newsletter article I referred to a study done at a University in London where it was proved that if you think deeply about a motion (for example visualizing your swing) that you actually reinforce the neural pathway that you are building for that swing during your actual physical practice.

This reinforces how understanding your swing concept is a HUGE skill development factor.

I call that owning your swing , if you don't own yours do something about it.

  • Second, one trains the body to consciously do that which the mind understands - or is working at understanding. While you perform under conscious control (block practice), expect to perform less than optimally at first. But then as you accumulate a larger volume of correct reps, your mind progressively develops a better understanding of how to tell the body how to perform the skill more proficiently. With increased practice, your confidence grows, you verbalize less, and your mind gradually gives up more and more conscious control of the movements involved in performing the action - it gets out of its own way. This is the fine-tuning stage of skill development.

  • Third is the stage that we strive for - automacity. It's when you move beyond conscious action and rely upon the intuition you've built into your swing through enough reps of block practice . At this level of development you no longer need to filter actions through the language portion of the brain. Verbal instruction (even to yourself) is of little value at this point. When you perform in the automatic stage of development, your muscles respond directly to the commands of your subconscious mind rather than conscious thought.

    Keypoints
    1. Know your swing and think about it often and deeply.
    2. Put in the physical practice reps as you strive for automacity.
    3. Then let your swing happen without conscious swing thoughts - when you play.

    Try it, you'll like it.
