Spin Loft and Compression

After last week's newsletter, I received a question related to spin.

The question was: "Why does moving the ball back in your stance make the ball check (spin) more?"

From last week's newsletter:

  • How can I make my ball check and stop?

Technique: For a medium to low trajectory chip that stops relatively quickly after checking, use a 54* or 56* wedge with a crisp stroke, ball positioned just rear of center, and do not allow any clubface rotation through impact. Hold the face square to the path.

The answer revolves around spin loft and compression.

If you didn't know a little about how compression affects ball flight and spin, you might think that adding loft by itself would produce more backspin.

It's true that adding loft produces a higher trajectory, so gravity from a steeper landing angle may or may not help the ball stop faster than a lower trajectory shot.

In the image above, the red line represents the launch angle off the face, the yellow line represents the angle of attack.

The difference between those two lines is called spin loft.

Spin loft is the three-dimensional angle between the direction the club head is moving (yellow line above) (both club path and attack angle) and the direction the club face is pointing (red line above) (both face angle and dynamic loft).

When you move the ball back further in your stance, the red line would be lower - representing less loft, and the yellow line would disproportionately steeper - representing a steeper angle of attack. Spin loft would be increased, compression is decreased, and more spin is produced.

A slightly steeper than normal angle of attack with an iron decreases the compression on the ball and produces more spin.

Understanding cause and effect will really help you gain full control of your chipping.

. Experiment a little when you practice your chipping, and you will give yourself more scoring options around the green.

    Try it, you'll like it.
