Tom's Featured Tip: Medium to Short Length Pitch Shots Off Of Uneven Lies

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Todays tip is going to be short, sweet, and I can't overstate it's importance.

It's about setup, execution, and club selection for medium to short length pitch shots off of uphill or downhill lies.

Setup

The tendency for either uphill or downhill lies is to load or brace your weight against the high side (uphill lie) or the low side (downhill lie).

That's usually a recipe for disaster because a chunked or thin strike usually follows if you don't make another adjustment. You'll often dig your club into the hill (uphill lie) or bounce the club into the ball (downhill lie).

The errant strike isn't caused so much by how the body weight is being braced for balance, as much as how the shoulders are aligned to the ground.

Most of the time, players lean into an uphill lie, and then tilt their shoulders into the slope, so that their shoulders are essentially tilted downward towards the ground. For downhill lies, players often lean away from the slope, and the shoulders are usually tilted upwards away from the ground.

Chunks and skulls are usually the results in these situations.

Here's the simple fix: always make sure that your shoulders are set parallel to the slope of the ground where your ball lies.

Shot Execution
  1. Bodyweight distributed for balance, as close to 50% - 50% as it can be given the lie.

  2. Shoulders parallel to the ground.

  3. Ball placement should be generally near your swing bottom, usually a touch forward of center for an uphill lie, a touch back from center for a downhill lie. You may need to find your personal swing bottom on these types of lies through some focused practice.

  4. Normal backswing.

  5. Impact - just brush the grass at the ball, no significant divot should result.

  6. Accelerate through impact - don't flinch.
Club Selection
  1. Normal flat lie - select the club - usually a wedge - that you need to carry any rough, trap, or obstruction to the green.

  2. Uphill lie - choose a less lofted wedge than you would normally use off a flat lie for the desired carry. ie a 56* wedge to 52* wedge - because the lie adds loft and will produce a higher trajectory than normal for the selected club.

  3. Downhill lie - choose a more lofted wedge than you would normally use off a flat lie for the desired carry. ie: a 56* wedge to 60* wedge - because the lie subtracts loft and will produce a lower trajectory than normal for the selected club.

Try this, you'll really like it.
