Junior Golf Camp
Junior Golf Camp at BCC

We still have openings for the week of July 17th through 21st, call 585 343 7600 to reserve a spot for your junior golfer!

This year I'll be conducting two weeks of Junior Golf Camp for boys and girls at the Batavia Country Club. I will be assisted by Roxanne Noeth, who has won the BCC Ladies Club Championship seven times.

At the camp, junior golfers will learn the basic skills of golf, as well as golf etiquette and self discipline. There will be daily games and prizes, and all the kids have had a blast at past camps. Availability is limited to 20 kids per week, it's on a first come first served basis.

This years camp will run for five days, Monday through Friday.

Junior Golf Camp hours are as follows:
Monday - Thursday 8:30am - 11 am. Monday through Thursday will include instruction, play, and contests.
Friday - Tournament starts at 6:45 am sharp and usually takes about two hours. Each player needs a caddy age 16 or over, and a brief awards presentation follows the tournament.

There will be a ten minute break half way through each session, players should bring their own beverages and snacks.

Dates and Age Groupings are as follows:

July 10 - 14 - Ages 7 - 9
July 17 - 21 - Ages 10 - 15

The cost for an individual junior golfer is $99 for the week. If two siblings attend during the same week, the cost drops to $89 per junior golfer.

Players will need to bring their own equipment.

For more information or to register, please contact the Batavia Country Club (585) 343-7600 ext 10. Payment is required to reserve your spot.

Tom's Featured Tip:
Q&A: How Long Should A Golf Ball Last?

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Q: Hi Tom,

Since the premium balls I like to play are fairly pricey ($4.00 each), how long can I expect to play with the same ball without a loss in performance?

Thanks,

Tom P., Amherst, NY

A: Thanks for the question Tom. I did a little research on this and here's what I came up with.

The premium balls today are all three or four piece balls. They are no longer made with rubber windings, they are all made with solid cores. These do not wear out or change in performance properties for a very long time.

You can probably play with one of these balls for at least twenty rounds or more on condition that the cover surface on the ball is not scuffed or damaged in any way.

In some of the balls used on tour, the final or outer cover is only about .020 inches thick. This is equivalent to the thickness of two standard business cards. It is this layer that influences the performance around the greens. Most importantly, it is in this final outer cover, in which the dimples are molded.

Without dimples, a ball which normally flies 260 yards, will only travel 130 yards. So this thin layer is very important. Also, remember to clean your ball whenever possible as dirt in the dimples will affect performance.

The "take it to the bank" answer is this: today’s balls will perform well until the surface gets scuffed, damaged, or has dirt on it.

This should answer your question Tom, and thanks again for taking the time to ask.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Putting - Distance Control

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Today was Day One of Junior Golf Camp for nine junior golfers ages 7 - 9.

We cover putting on day one, and I wanted to share what we did that turned these young novice golfers into pretty good lag putters.

We started with the basics - reverse overlap grip, stance, and stroke mechanics. I had the kids practicing their stroke with a general target in mind, and although their strokes made progress, their distance control was all over the place.

Then we had a lag putting contest and I had the kids do one specific thing that transformed them all into capable or very good lag putters: I had them stare at the hole from next to the ball and execute three practice strokes while trying to feel the stroke they wanted to use when they struck their putt. Then they stepped into the ball and executed some fantastic lag putts.

I'll say that again: they stared at the hole - NOT THE BALL - while they executed their practice strokes.

The before and after was like night and day.

Here's the takeaway for you: if you struggle with lag putting, take a few practice strokes next to the ball while staring at the hole before you execute your stroke and your results will improve. I'll even give you the rarely used "TCT Guarantee" on this one, try it you'll like it.
