Tom's Featured Tip: Squaring The Putterface

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

When I hear something on a golf telecast that I think may be misleading to the average player, I feel obliged to address it in this newsletter.

Such was the case during the "OHL Classic At Mayakoba" tournament on Sunday. An announcer was commenting on the putting woes of Scott Piercy, who eventually finished 7th in the tournament that was won by Pat Perez. Congratulations to Perez by the way, he hadn't won in 7 years and just came off surgery, so his hard work and tenaciousness paid off.

Piercy had just missed a putt and the announcer commented that Piercy had been working on closing the face of his putter at impact as opposed to executing a straight back - straight through stroke. The implication was that Piercy had been leaving the face open due to his old straight back - straight through stroke method.

It would have been better if the announcer had just said that Piercy had changed to an arcing stroke method.

I say that because if you consciously manipulate your hands to open and close the clubface during your putting stroke, the odds of getting it rotated perfectly from open in your backswing to square at impact are stacked against you. It's a death move

Regardless of whether a player tries to execute a pure straight back - straight through putting stroke or an arcing stroke, they should try to keep the face square to their path throughout the whole stroke.

I'm pre-disposed to the straight back - straight through method, but either it or an arcing stroke method will deliver the clubface square to the target line at impact if these factors are present:
  • Your lower torso stays completely still through impact
  • Your head stays completely still through impact
  • The stroke is powered exclusively by rocking the shoulders
  • The hands, wrists, and arms stay passive during the stroke
When you stroke a putt with these factors in place with either stroke method, the putterface will be delivered square to the target line. Personally, I feel that there's a little more margin for error with the straight back - straight through method, but some players prefer the arcing stroke, and so be it.

Maybe either method should be called square back - square through? :-)

Tom's Bonus Tip: Winter Challenge

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Although I'm planning on playing golf this Friday, and although I still have a couple of outdoor lessons scheduled, the outdoor golf season for WNY is just about over.

I am laying out a challenge here for all of you that want to improve for next year.

Starting the first week in December, do five ultra slow motion complete golf swings per day, five days per week. Do them with a club in hand if you have ceiling room. If not, do them with a club gripped halfway down the shaft. Pay attention to where the clubface is at impact.

If you like to practice, do anything else that you want to do, but do the five ultra slow motion full golf swings per day five days per week, and you'll reap the benefits in the spring.

There is one pre-requisite for this exercise, it's that you know your swing.

If you don't, learn it, then do the exercise.

If you don't think you can learn a swing on your own, contact me for lessons and we'll get it done.

Obviously lessons cost money, but it can be money well spent. It reminds me of a story a student of mine told me a few years back. He took lessons in the early spring, and when the season came around his playing partners noticed the improvement in his game and asked him if he bought new clubs.

His answer was a classic.

He said "No, I bought a new swing".

Try it, you'll like it.
