Tom's Featured Tip: Golf Ball Compression List

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I've had quite a few questions about golf ball compression lately, so I've decided to list the major golf balls on the market with their compression rating - low, mid, or high.

Compression ratings used to be published on the ball sleeves and boxes, some manufacturers even imprinted compression ratings right on the cover of the ball. My personal favorite ball was the Titleist Tour 90 before I started using the Pro V1. They also had a Tour 100 which reacted like the newer Pro V1x, a high compression ball. Manufacturers have gotten away from identifying ball compression per se. Emphasis these days seems to be on the "layers" of material in their construction.

The quick and easy on ball compression is this:
  • if your driver swing speed is below 85mph, play a low compression ball.

  • if your driver swing speed is between 85mph and 105mph, play a mid compression ball - but also experiment with a low.

  • if your driver swing speed is above 105mph, play a high compression ball - but also experiment with a mid.
I could say a lot more about compression, but I'll summarize by saying this - compression isn’t the only important consideration when you decide on what ball best fits your swing, but it is an important variable you should be aware of.

Here's the golf ball compression list in alphabetical order, it's a long one:

Tom's Bonus Tip: Moe Norman Quotes

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

"Winners see what they want. Losers see what they don't want. Don't let the game eat you; you eat the game."

"Knowledge of the game, not talent, is the equalizer that eludes the many who strive for excellence."

Moe Norman

Moe Norman. Murray Irwin "Moe" Norman (July 10, 1929 - September 4, 2004) was a Canadian professional golfer. His accuracy and ability to hit shot after shot perfectly straight was uncanny.

Norman was a player on the Canadian Tour throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s. A proud son of Kitchener, Ontario, Norman was primarily known for two things: his idiosyncrasies, which effected everything from his wardrobe to his demeanor, and his accuracy.

Simply put, many consider Norman the greatest ball-striker of all-time.

While explaining what spurred one of his swing changes, Tiger Woods told Golf Digest's Jaime Diaz that "Only two players have ever truly owned their swings: Moe Norman and Ben Hogan. I want to own mine." Ken Venturi called Norman "Pipeline Moe" in reference to his pin-point marksmanship. Perhaps Lee Trevino summed it up best when saying, "When you talk about Moe Norman, you are talking about a legend."
