Tom's Featured Tip: Four Non-Swing Tips For Playing Better Golf

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Here are four non-swing tips for playing better that I've discovered one way or another over the years. Personally, I think this type of information is a treasure trove for golf improvement as well as for self improvement.

Enjoy!

  1. Build Up Your Confidence by Spending Two Minutes Power Posing

This is no joke, it really works.

Before you play find a private place to power pose - either at home or even in a bathroom stall at the course clubhouse - for two minutes.

Try The Superman Pose, which is simply standing tall, chest lifted, head held high, and arms either raised up like an Olympic Champion, or propped on your hips like Superman often did .

It's been proven through research that nonverbals govern how we think and feel about ourselves, that our bodies can change our minds, and that we can force the issue.

This is a serious tip, but I don't recommend doing this on the practice green before your round. Your buddies might think you're nuts. Find someplace private to do it.

  2. Positive Self Talk and Positive Imagery

Give yourself a pep talk on the way to the course, and during your round as necessary. On your way to the course, visualize yourself looking at a scorecard with your score for the day breaking 100, 90, 80, or 70 depending on your level of play. Feel the satisfaction of shooting a good round ahead of time.

  3. Breathe Deeply Before Your First Tee Shot

Four count inhale through your nose, eight count exhale through your nose - for sixty seconds. Set your phone timer and you'll be good to go.

  4. This is actually a combo non-swing and swing tip: Try To Feel Grounded

Your state of mind actually affects your center of gravity. When you're very uptight, thinking a lot, full of chatter in your mind as you enter into a shot, it will be as if your center of gravity is up near your head. But when you feel grounded, down-to-earth, centered in your body, you are much less likely to sway and lunge.

Quiet your mind as you address the ball and your balance will be better throughout the swing.
I realize that these tips may seem a little off the wall to some, but they really work so why not give them a try?

Tom's Bonus Tip: Advance The Ball

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

This is a tip that applies to chipping as well as any other swing we make.

Many players set up with an incorrect mindset, most of the time it involves helping the ball get into the air.

This simple tip will help you make better contact with all of your shots.

When you set up don't think about trajectory, the loft of the club will take care of that.

Instead, simply think "move the ball towards the target".

This simple thought will help you stay down and through on all of your shots at impact, and will help fight the urge to try to help the ball into the air with a flipping motion. It goes hand in hand with last week's tip on using less lofted club for most chipping situations.

This concept will help you on every swing, but it's especially effective on chip shots.

"Move the ball towards the target".

Try it, you'll like it.
