Tom's Featured Tip: Pull Don't Loop

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

This week's tip is going to be short but very sweet.

If you are hitting your irons fat (ground first, ball second), first of all set up with your weight feathered onto your forward leg and don't make any significant shift to the rear leg during your backswing. Just execute a centered pivot, keeping your weight distributed the same as it was at address. Keep your head centered and stable.

Think about your backswing like this:
  • Set up with the club very slightly open to your eye.
  • Feel like you pause at the top of your backswing to allow your transition to occur in proper sequence.
Think about your downswing like this:
  • Feel like you are pulling the clubhead directly into the back of the ball on a slightly outward path, not looping the clubhead into the back of the ball on a circle. Of course it will be more of a circle than a straight line, but don't think of it that way.

  • The direction of the outward path should be about where your clubface is pointing when it's slightly open at address, or think of outward as a direction towards second base (just right of the target line), whichever works best for you.

  • The pulling directly into the back of the ball thought will work forever, as long as your left arm remains firm to maintain radius, and you do the proper shifting and turning movements in your downswing.

  • The outward path can be overdone, so monitor that angle closely. Not too much outward, but never down the line either.

Try pulling instead of looping and your ball striking become crisper than ever.

You'll love it, guaranteed.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Ping Demo Day at BCC

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

The Batavia Country Club is hosting its first Ping Demo day on Wednesday May 25th, 2016 from 4pm to 7pm. I've been on record about my opinion of Ping products, which is very high - I use them myself. I believe that their quality control is the best in the business.

For those who've never attended a demo day, you pick from an assortment of irons, hybrids, woods, and drivers and take a few swings. The tech rep who is in attendance then looks at your ball flight and makes recommendations for model or shaft adjustments, then you take a few more swings with an adjusted club.

There will be a Trackman monitor on site as well. Pat Carli, the local Ping sales rep, will conduct the demo day, and I'll be there along with Tom Moynihan to help out.

There will be clubs for sale on that day, but there's no obligation or pressure to buy.

To reserve a spot or for more information, please call the Batavia Country Club Pro Shop at (585) 343-7600.
