Tom's Featured Tip: Two Impact Drills

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Here are a couple of drills I use regularly with my students that you can do this winter to help you improve what is called the impact fix position.
  1. Practice moving from your setup position into the impact fix position.

    • Set up with an 8 iron and a ball as you normally would for the shot.

    • Now shift into the impact fix position by keeping your head still, moving your weight laterally forward by sliding your hips forward laterally, and forward pressing your hands. Don't let the bottom of the clubhead slide forward when you forward press your hands
Weight (hips) forward, hands forward, head still

    • Hold the impact fix position for eight seconds, then return to your setup position and do it again. Don't make a swing, just go back and forth between positions to feel the difference.

    • Do this drill very deliberately for five focused minutes whenever you the drill.

    • Click Here - The first image on this page shows a great impact fix position.

  2. Practice short swings with an awareness tool.

    • Execute short punch shot type swings (no ball) with your pitching wedge while holding a 48" driveway marker rod alongside the shaft, extending upward alongside your body.

    • As you follow through from the swing, make sure you transport the impact angles of your hands and wrists into your 3/4 follow through.

    • A correct follow through will not allow the rod to strike your side because your hands will still be ahead of the clubhead like they were at impact. You will, however, feel it if your hands are in an incorrect position because the rod will bang into your side if the clubhead catches up to your hands too soon.

    • Click Here - The image at the bottom of this page shows how to hold the rod.
These drills can easily be done indoors. If your ball striking was sub standard last year, doing these two drills over the winter will cure your ills.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Training Aids - What's Important

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

When a student takes lessons from me we develop a relationship. Part of that relationship includes me responding to their text, email, or phone call questions.

Most of the questions are swing, equipment, or training aid related.

My answer to a training aid question is usually pretty simple: if the training aid provides feedback, it may be worth the money. If it does all the work for you and provides no feedback, don't waste your money.

A great example of a training aid that provides great feedback is the 48" driveway marker rod referred to in todays featured tip. If you swing incorrectly, it bangs into your side. That's feedback, and on top of that it only costs about $2 at Home Depot. PLUS you can use it as alignment tool when you hit balls at the range.

Good feedback, inexpensive, and two uses - you just hit the training aid trifecta baby!

On the other hand, I don't like those big circle pvc swing trainers that have you swing a club or a simulated club on a guided path. I don't really see or feel any realistic feedback there, and they are expensive to boot.

Don't get me wrong, I'll spend whatever it takes if I find a training aid that I really like, provides feedback, and that I think is effective. But it there's no feedback it's a no go for me, and it should be the same for you.
