Tom's Featured Tip: Handling Pressure

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

If you fold like a cheap suit on four foot putts or habitually skull or chunk chips, there are a couple things you can do to improve your performance.

You can work on technique ie: keeping weight more on the forward foot for chips, and you can employ a tempo mantra such as "straight back - straight through" for putts, or "swing back - swing through" for chips.

Both of those things will definitely help, but there's also a very simple mental "trick" that I used to use with my college golf teams that really helped calm the nerves down in high pressure situations.

The basis of the cure was this question: What's The Worst That Can Happen?

I used to tell my college players to ask themselves that question whenever they faced a pressure situation - like a four foot putt to win a match.

The worst thing that could happen as a result of missing that four footer is that you lose the match.

Life goes on, those that loved you before still love you. Your friends are still your friends. You live and learn.

Worrying about missing that putt serves no useful purpose. You need to view these seemingly important events in context with a larger view of life.

I had a college player tell me during his match, that it was a "must win" if we were going to get to nationals. I explained that a "must win" was World War ll (I borrowed that phrase from Marv Levy), and I think that helped the player put things in perspective. He won his match easily that day.

In the vast scheme of things, that four footer really isn't that important.

And here's the bonus - when you adopt that frame of mind, worry and tension diminish, and you'll actually make a higher percentage of better swings as well as more putts!

Adopt a big picture mindset and ask yourself "What's The Worst That Can Happen?" in pressure situations when you play golf (and in life), and your performance will improve.

Try it, you'll like it.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Chip It Low

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Chip shots should be on the ground and rolling as soon as possible, which means they should be a low trajectory shot.

A great way to practice this - indoors or outdoors - is chipping under a bench.

Put this practice drill on your winter practice bucket list.
