Tom's Featured Tip: Q&A: Releasing The Putterhead

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Q: Hi Tom,

In your last newsletter you said that after Brandon Grace missed a putt left, an announcer said that Grace had the blade closed at impact, and that Grace needed more acceleration. How do you get the blade to square up if you want to use a stroke that releases the putterhead?

Thanks, William H.

A: That's a good question William.

I think there is a lot of confusion on the concept of "releasing the putterhead".

First of all, most of the players that putt with what they consider to be a release of the putterhead, aren't really releasing it at all.

Most or all of those players use an arcing stroke, which comes inside on the backswing, rather than down the line, then just after the strike the putter comes inside on the follow through.

If you observe closely, you will notice that the putterhead is staying square to the inside to inside arcing swingpath, not actually opening or closing.

The putterhead does appear to be opening on the backswing and closing on the follow because that's how it looks in relation to the aimline.

You could be a great putter with this stroke but it requires a lot of practice. I still like a more vertical stroke path which travels more down the line - straight back and straight through - because the margin for error favors a square face at impact. There's also not as not as much perfect timing involved.

I will pretty much guarantee poor results if you consciously try to close the face at impact with hand manipulation. Too much timing and hand eye coordination is involved for that stroke to ever to be as repeatable and accurate as an arcing stroke with no manipulation of the hands, or a straight back - straight through stroke, which I personally favor.

Before you switch to a new stroke that insludes a lot of hand movement, do your research and make sure that you were doing your old stroke perfectly before you abandon it.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Before You Buy That New Putter

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I get this question all the time " what's the most important thing to consider when buying a new putter?"

The answer is simple - own your putting stroke first, then buy a putter that fits it.

Of course there are other considerations like length, loft, lie, head style, head weight, etc., but owning your stroke absolutely must come first. That affects every other aspect of putter fitting.

So learn a stroke that suits your eye and body by either doing research or taking a lesson, than get a putter with a putterhead style that that suits your stroke. Blade style head with a little toe hang for an arcing stroke, mallet head for more of a straight back - straight through method.
