Q&A: Can I Teach Myself To Play Golf At A High Level?

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I had a reader email me this question last week: Hi Tom I was just wondering if you think a serious player could teach himself to play golf at a very high level.
Thanks, Erik from Rochester.

Thanks for your question Erik, I've actually had this discussion on numerous occasions with friends.

The quick answer is yes - with a couple of caveats.

It absolutely can be done with diligent study and practice. One pro golfer that I know of - Jacob Bowden - got his start that way. However, like a few other pro's that went that route in the beginning - he enlisted professional help at some point down the line to help him along his journey.

If you can insert yourself into my teaching process below, I think that you'd have a shot at maximizing your potential.

Maximizing your own personal potential is what you should strive for. Playing at a high level involves maximizing your potential with a high level of talent to begin with, which is God given.

Here's a synopsis of my teaching process:
  1. I do a pre-lesson screening in the form of a questionnaire asking the student questions about them, their game, and their attitude towards practice.

Then I conduct lessons for qualified students, where

  2. I look for what's costing that player shots.
  3. I connect that information to impact patterns that I'm seeing.
  4. I draw from possible solutions (as I've written a zillion times - golf is a game of discovery).
  5. I construct solutions (thought patterns, drills etc.) that will give the student the best chances for improvement.
Caveats
  • Impact is a big deal, it must be understood thoroughly as a starting point for improvement.
  • The player must have the ability to evaluate their own swing issues as they relate to impact patterns. If they can do that, they will be able to work on good low point control and clubface control at impact.
  • The player will need to be able to video his/her swing to effectively analyze impact factors, that's where a set of educated instructor eyes can be very helpful.
  • Keeping all of this in mind, the student would then need to go to youtube and find a cybermentor.
There are many excellent instructors on youtube and on private websites, just find a good one and stick with that person. Don't wander, or you'll become hopelessly confused.

Read good books golf technique. In this age of online informational videos, sometimes books are overlooked.

So, other mitigating factors notwithstanding, it's essentially a time or money decision.

You can spend a lot of time online looking for the right free information and connecting the dots. If you are disciplined, structured, and have educated yourself on swing theory, this can work well.

OR you can invest in lessons and have a correct path for improvement constructed for you.

Either way can work Erik, the choice is yours!

Try it, you'll like it!
