Simple Putting Tip

It was such a beautiful day today in Western New York, that I blew the leaves off my outdoor green and gave a putting lesson.

This particular student is a motivated senior golfer who is anxious to improve his game.

Part of my overall philosophy on teaching is that everyone has their own golf swing DNA, and if any changes need to be made for efficiency or for ball flight correction, I stay within their DNA as much as possible.

In other words, I don't try to fix anything that's not really broken.

For full swing instruction, there are some new players and some initiated (experienced) players who want or need a little more structure in building an efficient swing. For those students I integrate varying degrees of the swing system I use into their instruction.

I've found that putting is different in a lot of respects. I've taught players that have had very odd setups and/or swing paths in their personal putting DNA, but that putted very well regardless.

For those players I usually add three points of emphasis:
  1. Setting up with the face square to their target line.
  2. Having the putter properly soled.
  3. Looking at the hole (not the ball) while striking the ball - a fairly recent point of emphasis for me.
The student I worked with today putted remarkably well on his short and mid range putts after emphasizing the three points above, even though his shoulders were slightly open at address.

However, his longer putt attempts all started left of the intended target line.

After observing several putts with the same result, my conclusion was that his slightly open shoulders caused him to swing too much to the left on his longer putts. If the face would have stayed square to his target, the putts actually would have followed the correct line. But because more energy was needed for a longer putt, the face was following the leftward swingpath, resulting in a face that was now aligned to the left of his intended target line at the strike, causing the left miss.

Here was the simple fix: I had him set up with his shoulders aligned in unison with his feet and hips. After a few practice strokes, all of his putts - short, medium, and long - followed the correct line after the strike.

If this miss pattern is something you are experiencing, pay closer attention to your body alignment and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Try it, you'll like it.
