DRIVER DISTANCE BY AGE

After last week's newsletter article on "how far should I be hitting my driver?" which was categorized by handicap, I had several emails from golfers asking me how far they should be hitting their driver by age.

Again, my answer is that you should be hitting your driver as far as your body allows you to, keeping good technique and good balance in mind.

Having said that, here's what I found.

Arccos Golf conducted an annual study culminating in the company's distance report published in February, which included the average driving distance of amateur golfers in different age categories.

The data is based on the average taken from over 26 million shots hit from golfers from scratch level to a 25 index. Here are the findings for 2019:

Average Driving Distance By Age in 2019:
  • 10-19: 234.2 yards
  • 20-29: 239.7 yards
  • 30-39: 233.7 yards
  • 40-49: 225.9 yards
  • 50-59: 215.4 yards
  • 60-69: 204.5 yards
  • 70+: 190.4 yards
For clarification purposes, the yardages above are based on total roll-out numbers, not just carry.

MOST COMMON PUTTING MISTAKE

Here's the most common putting mistake - by far - that I see in my students at their lessons, and in my observation of amateur golfers. You even see an anxious Tour Pro do it every now and then:

Lifting your head to watch the ball as you strike your putt.

If you lift your head to watch the ball on its way to the hole, you will most likely miss the putt. The reason for this is that lifting the head changes your posture and the pivot point of the stroke. Your alignment and swing plane are compromised in mid-stroke, changing the putter head path and the putter face presentation to the ball.

It usually causes a miss that's short and off line because you've struck the ball with somewhat of a glancing blow instead of with square compression, and you probably have opened the face too.

When I have a student that has this tendency, I have them place their ball on a dime, then I have them stroke their putt with the caveat that they can't swivel (never lift) their head to see the putt until after they see their undisturbed dime.

This kills two birds with one stone: they keep their head still until after the ball is off the putter head, and they can feel if they have struck the ball squarely and just slightly on the ascending portion of their swing circle.

Then I tell them to imagine a dime under the ball when they are actually playing, and to see the spot where the dime would have been before they swivel their head to watch the ball.

On short putts, I tell my students to totally ignore watching the ball roll out, and to listen for it to drop into the hole instead.

Practice this way, you'll really like the results.
